What Started My Passion

I always had a love for photography since I was a young child. My parents had a great appreciation for all things beautiful. They made sure to point out the small intricate details of the world. They would share how you have to take time to stop and see the beauty in everything. I believe this is what sparked my eye for photography and the beauty of the world.Midcoast Maine Wedding Photographer This passion eventually sparked my interest in creating beautiful films and started making a name for myself as a premiere Maine wedding videographer.

Travelling Photography

We all have that one thing we are great at or passionate about and for me that is photography in all forms. I did not start out as a wedding photographer in Bangor, ME. However, I always had a love for weddings and the emotions that come along with them. In 2010 my journey down the road to photography began. In 2010, I backpacked through Europe and Africa. For this spontaneous adventure of my life. I originally began this journey because my best friend (soul sister) April was to move to Germany with her Air Force husband Dale. Naturally, I planned an amazing trip to see as much as I possibly could in the short eight weeks I would visit. While I was dealing with the emotions of parting with my best friend and leaving her across the world. So started my adventure.  However, once all the tickets were purchased and hostels (yes, hostels) were booked there was a change of plans. April and Dale would be staying in the states after all. (Good news! Yet now I had to find lodging when I make the trip to Germany.) The thought crossed my mind that I would be across the world alone exploring all the differences and experiencing things not many others would be able to. I had that nervous exciting feeling in my heart like when you are about to drop on a roller coaster. It was all or nothing now. My first stop was Ireland. My stops consisted of Ireland (Dublin), England (London), France (Paris), Italy (Venice, Verona, and Rome), Greece (Athens, and Santorini), and Egypt (Cairo). Now, I could make a blog post specifically on this trip. I could go on and on about all the beauty and people that shaped who I am as a person today, but that will have to be another blog. It wasn’t until I got to Venice, Italy where the beauty smacked me in the face.

Venice

I will never forget the feeling I felt when I got off the train at the station in Venice and walked out to the Grand Canal. Now, many of you that know me are aware that I am petrified of water. This was a sight that was too beautiful to be afraid. This was really the moment my photography journey began.

The Start

I carried a little point and shoot Canon camera and I was taking pictures of literally everything. It was like I was so overwhelmed by all the beauty I wanted to bottle it all up. Later, I came to a footbridge made of wood, and as I walked over the footbridge I looked down this narrow canal that was lined with old brick buildings and something about it just sucked me in. Standing on that bridge, I can remember taking the first picture that I thought was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen and it was simple yet a stunning sight. The most interesting thing about Venice besides it being so old and full of rich history is that it’s built on water. In this picture, you can see how it all flows well together like the city is part of the water. This was the moment I told myself to live in the moment and see with my eyes and not always behind the lens. It was this picture and this particular experience that began to shape my love of photography. I realized it was so beautiful in person but on the back of the camera, I saw so much more.

Coming Home

After my many adventures across the world I came home and spent money on my first DSLR. A Canon Rebel T3i (this was my first large purchase and I was in love). Although I was no longer in Europe, my love for photography was only beginning. At this point, I was still in love with landscapes but I was now (upon request) dabbling with photographing people. I was obsessed with getting up early and staying out way too late to capture the beauty of the natural world.Mid Coast Maine Wedding Photographer

Christopher Tierney

One day, I was asked to assist another photographer with an upcoming Bar Harbor Wedding Photography shoot. At this point, I began to have an interest in photography that included RAW emotions. So, I decided I would give this a try. Christopher Tierney became not only my mentor but a very good friend. He helped me discover my love for wedding photography. He showed me everything from the importance of the direction of light to posing. Most importantly how to also live in the moment and have fun. Only then, he said when you build a relationship with your clients and allow them to see your personality will you get the greatest images. Over time I shot several weddings with Chris. I started to develop my own style and began shooting weddings of my own. Then, of course, once I realized this was a niche in the photography industry. I naturally ran out and bought yet another camera a canon 6D and a canon Mark4 among a few other items 😉

Why I’m a Raw Wedding Photographer

In 2016 I moved to Maine. I began building a new wedding business in this beautiful state and meeting clients that have become life-long friends. Being a wedding photographer in Maine has opened several new opportunities for me. Including shooting in some of the most beautiful locations in the United States and meeting people from all over the world. My style of shooting is raw emotion: (Wedding Photography Styles Explained). From those that are eloping or having a destination wedding in Maine. The best part is I still get to travel and shoot several weddings within the United States.  I chose to be a wedding photographer because I live to capture the RAW emotions. The ones people experience on this day. I want to be the person to capture the moments that mean the most to them. The moments they can look back on and cherish. Weddings are full of RAW emotion. From the father/(special someone) giving the beautiful bride away. To the groom being overwhelmed with nervousness before seeing the love of his life. Parents crying tears of happiness. The greatest moment of all when the bride is walked down the aisle and her soon to be husband sees her for the first time. These are moments that have so much emotional impact that people can’t control the happiness this day brings. The nostalgia that some feel looking at their own husbands/wives that they have been with.  Being a wedding photographer will always be a gift and a privilege for me. I will always cherish all the clients I meet and treat every wedding uniquely as it is. I will never forget to live in the moment and not live only behind the lens. Thanks Chris. 🙂   XOXO, CatherineMidcoast Maine wedding photographermid coast maine wedding photography
