Asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you is a momentous occasion. Not only
have you got to buy the ring, but you’ve also got to choose the right backdrop – and with so
many beautiful options, it can be hard to decide which is right for you.
Fortunately, there isn’t one single perfect proposal spot, and New England is bursting with
everything from vibrant cities to serene areas, where you can organize a grand gesture or
relish the moment alone. Choosing a lovely setting not only creates a better atmosphere for
the big moment, but allows you to get some gorgeous photos, too.
Whether you hire a professional photographer or a friend or family member to grab some
covert snaps, here are three beautiful locations to pop the question.
Acadia National Park – Bar Harbor, Maine

A popular spot in New England, the first option for your dream proposal is Acadia National
Park, Maine. As one of the top ten most visited national parks in the US, this landscape
offers a multitude of photo possibilities, from breathtaking water views to private moments
beneath the towering trees.
Whilst summer is understandably a popular time to be outdoors here, spring or fall are better
for those who want a moment to themselves. The jewel tones of the red and orange leaves
in October provide a colorful backdrop without the weather being too cold to be outside.

Lake Willoughby – Westmore, Vermont

Known as the “Green Mountain State”, Vermont is renowned for its miles of picturesque pine
forest. But hidden within the greenery is the cool, clear stretch of water that is Lake
Willoughby. A glacial lake, nestled between two rocky outcrops, this place gives you the type
of scenery that you’d be forgiven for thinking you need to go to Norway to find.
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not hire a kayak or a paddleboard, and ask the all-
important question far away from any passers by? Whilst you might want to invest in a
floatable, waterproof bag for the ring (or leave it safe and secure in your car and use a candy
placeholder), this is a unique way to propose that will make for some fantastic photos.
Race Point Lighthouse – Provincetown, Massachusetts

Did you know that the US holds the record for the biggest number of lighthouses in the
world, with 670 still standing? These practical structures served an important purpose in
times gone by, but are also architecturally beautiful buildings, framed with some of the most
breathtaking landscapes you’ll find thanks to their coastal locations.
Race Point is no exception, taking a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a
walk with your loved one across golden sands (taking around 45 minutes) to reach the
lighthouse, or book to stay in the keeper’s cottage for an extra special trip. Incorporating the
walk will give you a good excuse to take a rucksack with the ring in it – no need to
awkwardly keep your hand in your pocket to hide the box.
Creating Your Memorable Moment
Whether you’re a New England local or are dreaming of a vacation proposal, you’ll truly be
spoilt for choice with the scenery here. Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with the location
so much that destination wedding bells will be on the horizon soon enough.
